Ana Hontanilla is a Professor of Spanish and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). She holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in Saint Louis. Her research focuses on Spanish literature, colonial history, and feminist poetics, with particular attention to migrant narratives, representations of otherness, and the intersection of literature with activism and law. She teaches courses on topics such as testimonio, creative writing, and advanced Spanish composition.
Hontanilla is the Editor of the International Poetry Review, a journal established in 1975 that publishes global poetry in original languages alongside English translations. Under her leadership, the journal has featured special issues on themes like “Poetry Beyond Duality” (2025), “The Arabic Spring” (2024), and “Poesía de protesta y revuelta en Latinoamérica” (2020). Her creative writing includes short stories and poetry published in venues like Chiricú Journal and Baquiana.
Her scholarly work spans analyses of race, reform, and literary collaboration in colonial and modern Spain, with notable contributions to understanding marginalized voices in historical archives. She has also explored the role of literature in shaping identity, particularly through projects like Arts and Activism: Migrant Stories in Images and Texts.
