Ana Del Conde

Ana Del Conde is a McPherson/Eveillard Postdoctoral Fellow at Smith College, affiliated with the Program for the Study of Women and Gender and the Jandon Center for Community Engagement. She is a cultural anthropologist specializing in feminist theory and engaged ethnographic research.

Del Conde's research focuses on the intersection of political anthropology and feminist studies, examining (in)security, conflict, justice, and collective action. Her ethnographic work in Michoacán, Mexico, investigates how P'urhépecha women navigate violence from organized crime and state security policies, highlighting gendered impacts and women-led communal security strategies through solidarity that remain largely invisibilized.

Her publications consistently analyze gender-based violence, indigenous autonomy, and resistance in Latin America. Recent works reveal trends in state-corporate violence, embodied resistance, and alternative justice frameworks within marginalized communities, emphasizing intersectional approaches to security and governance.

As a public scholar, Del Conde collaborates with grassroots organizations to develop human rights education projects and co-created a psychosocial network addressing gender-based violence in Michoacán. Her research is funded by the National Science Foundation, CONACYT (Mexico), and the University of Massachusetts, and she consults on international projects tackling insecurity across Latin America.
