Dr. Ana Barbosa is an Assistant Professor in Dementia Studies at the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies (CfADS), part of the University of Bradford's Faculty of Health Studies. She joined CfADS in 2015 and is Programme Leader for the PgCert/PgDip/MSc Advanced Dementia Studies. Her teaching roles include Module Leader for 'Evaluating Dementia Practice' and 'Leading Change in Practice.'
Barbosa holds a PhD in Gerontology and Geriatrics from the University of Minho, Portugal, with a thesis focused on psycho-educational interventions for dementia care workers. Her research interests span care home workforce support, person-centered care, technology integration in dementia care, and palliative care for dementia patients. She is actively involved in the INTERDEM taskforce, leading groups on Technology and Dementia and Palliative Care, and chairs their website committee.
Her research portfolio includes 8 projects such as the CoDeC study (Coronavirus and Dementia in Care Homes) and the AtTrack initiative exploring eye-tracking in dementia evaluation. Notable publications address dementia education for healthcare students, emotional labor in dementia research, and technology adoption during the pandemic.
Barbosa supervises four PhD students and co-supervises two, focusing on topics like dementia stigma in South Africa and virtual reality interventions for cognitive engagement. She sits on the University's Humanities, Social and Health Sciences Ethics Committee and maintains professional affiliations with key dementia research networks.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, bridging clinical practice, technology, and policy to improve dementia care outcomes globally.
