Amy Sorensen is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Emory Henry College. She serves as Co-Chair of the Sociology Department, Director of Access, Impact and Student Engagement, and Director of the Women’s/Gender Center. Her work focuses on complex inequalities, health/disability, and the sociology of the body, with a commitment to interdisciplinary social justice initiatives.
Education: Dr. Sorensen holds a PhD in Sociology and a Graduate Certificate in Women and Gender Studies from Virginia Tech, an MA and BA in Sociology from East Tennessee State University, and a Post-Doctoral Research position at the Institute on Disability and Human Development (University of Illinois at Chicago).
Research interests include disablement processes, the social construction of the body, and the intersection of health and inequality. Her current project with Dr. Shelley Koch examines the pandemic’s impact on household labor through longitudinal, mixed-methods research. She actively contributes to the Women’s and Gender Studies program and academic diversity initiatives.
Teaching spans courses like Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Health, and Policy Analysis. Her narrative emphasizes bridging theory with community engagement, particularly in fostering inclusive academic environments.
Collaborations include interdisciplinary projects on disability, aging, and institutional policy. She advocates for equity in education and community dialogue through her roles in campus centers and committees.
