Amy Richter is a Professor and Department Chair of History at Clark University. She specializes in 19th- and 20th-century American cultural and women’s history, with expertise in consumer culture, urban history, and domesticity. She teaches courses on American women’s history, urban development, gender studies, and consumer culture.
Dr. Richter holds a Ph.D. in History from New York University (2000) and a B.A. in Urban Studies from Columbia College, Columbia University (1991). Her research explores intersections of gender, consumption, and domestic life. Current work investigates marriage and the consumer marketplace at the turn of the 20th century.
Her scholarly publications include Home on the Rails (2005) and At Home in Nineteenth-Century America (2015). Recent works analyze furniture as cultural artifact and the Clemente Course’s impact on low-income adult learners. She directs the Worcester Clemente Course, an award-winning humanities program empowering underserved communities.
