Amy Morsman is a Professor of American History at Middlebury College, where she has served since 2001. She holds a PhD from the University of Virginia and specializes in gender roles, race relations, and regional differences in U.S. history. Her teaching focuses on the Civil War, gender history, and interdisciplinary topics like Ralph Ellison’s influence and catastrophic memories. She has held administrative roles, including Interim Dean for Faculty Development & Research (2018–19), Director of the Digital Liberal Arts Initiative (2019–20), and currently leads the First Year Seminar Program.
Her research includes her 2010 book *The Big House After Slavery: Virginia Plantation Families and their Postbellum Domestic Experiment*, and ongoing projects on postbellum race relations in the Northeast and a digital history project on Solomon Northup. She has contributed to courses such as *Civil War and Reconstruction* and *History of American Women*, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and public history.
Morsman’s work bridges historical scholarship with institutional leadership, advocating for liberal arts education and digital humanities. She has collaborated on community-based projects like *Chronicling COVID-19*, blending historical methods with contemporary societal challenges.
