Andrew Donnelly is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Memphis. His research focuses on U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction eras, Southern Studies, and cultural history. He earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2020 and a B.A. from Boston College.
His book Confederate Sympathies: Same-Sex Romance, Disunion, and Reunion in the Civil War Era (UNC Press, 2025) examines themes of romance and national identity during the Civil War. He has also published articles in journals like American Literary History and Civil War History.
Donnelly previously worked as a Mellon/ACLS Public Fellow at the National Book Foundation and founded the Freedom Summer Collegiate program, which offers college-bridge courses for high school students in Mississippi. His work bridges literary analysis with educational outreach and historical reinterpretation.
His research interests emphasize intersections of gender, sexuality, and race in postbellum America, with a focus on how literature reflects and shapes cultural narratives around disunion and reunion.
