Amy Kowal is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Florida State University (FSU), specializing in four-field anthropology with a focus on community and cultural heritage, museum studies, historical archaeology, and race/ethnicity studies.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Anthropology from FSU, B.A. in Anthropology from State University of New York at Buffalo
Her research examines multicultural contact situations in the southeastern United States, particularly African American agency evidenced through material culture analysis (e.g., ceramic assemblages at Snee Farm, SC). She co-authored the archaeological report for the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site.
As an undergraduate educator, she teaches courses across all subdisciplines (archaeology, cultural anthropology, biological anthropology) and emphasizes anthropology's humanistic-scientific synthesis.
