Amy Hauft is a distinguished sculptor and academic, serving as the Jane Reuter Hitzeman and Herbert F. Hitzeman, Jr. Professor of Art and Director of the College & Graduate School of Art at Washington University in St. Louis (Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts since 2019). She holds a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1980) and an M.F.A. in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1983). Her career includes roles as Chair of Sculpture at Virginia Commonwealth University (2004–2012) and the Leslie Waggener Professor at the University of Texas at Austin (2012–2019).
Hauft’s research focuses on architectural-scale installations exploring human interaction with space, environment, and cosmic themes. Her work combines physical and cognitive engagement, evident in exhibitions like 700,000:1 | Terra + Luna + Sol (MASS MoCA, 2022) and Counter Re-Formation (VCU Anderson Gallery, 2010). Awards include the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, Howard Foundation Fellowship, and residencies in Italy and Poland.
Her grants include the Pew Exhibitions Initiative, Public Art Fund, and multiple university research awards. Hauft has curated exhibitions such as Suzanne (2012) and authored catalogues like Teresita Fernandez (2008). She has presented globally, including at Yale University, MASS MoCA, and international museums.
