Amy Gutmann is President Emerita of the University of Pennsylvania and former U.S. Ambassador to Germany (2022–2024). She holds the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professorship of Political Science in the School of Arts and Sciences and is a Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication. She also holds secondary faculty appointments in the Graduate School of Education and Philosophy. Her research focuses on democracy, deliberation, bioethics, and public ethics, with over 100 articles and 17 books to her name, including Democratic Education and The Spirit of Compromise.
Her academic career spans four decades, marked by leadership in higher education and diplomatic service. She is celebrated for integrating theory and practice in democratic governance and ethics.
