Amy Gillingham is Associate Professor of Strings (Cello) and Director of Orchestras at Northern Kentucky University, where she also serves as String Area Coordinator and Director of the NKU String Project. She is affiliated with the School of the Arts within the College of Arts and Sciences, and holds the Corbett Endowed Principal of Strings distinction.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Music from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and both a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
A dedicated educator and innovator, Dr. Gillingham has focused her career on expanding access to string education through outreach programs. She co-founded the nationally recognized NKU String Project and helped establish over 40 String Project sites nationwide. Her research and professional interests center on string pedagogy, cello performance, orchestral training, and community engagement in the arts. As a performer, she has collaborated with major artists and ensembles across genres, including Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and has over 50 internationally distributed recordings.
She has secured over $200,000 in grant funding for creative and educational outreach initiatives. Dr. Gillingham has held leadership roles including Executive Director of the National String Project Consortium, President of the Kentucky American String Teachers Association, and National Chair of the ASTA Student Advisory Committee.
Her accolades include the Corbett Endowed Principal of Strings distinction and multiple national and regional awards for teaching, creativity, and service.
Dr. Gillingham is also active as a conductor, having made her debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and frequently guest conducts youth and honor orchestras. She is passionate about foster care and is a licensed foster and adoptive parent. She is married to Michael Culligan, Associate Principal Percussionist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
