Dr. Joy Burdette is a Lecturer in Voice at Northern Kentucky University (NKU), where she has served for 23 years. She is affiliated with the School of the Arts within the College of Arts and Sciences. Her roles include teaching vocal performance, musical theatre, and serving as a music director for NKU's Mainstage Theatre Company. She is also a regular performer with the Cincinnati Opera, appearing as a soloist and chorus member for two decades.
Education: She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music (M.M.) from the University of Louisville School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) from the University of the Cumberlands.
Research and Performance: Dr. Burdette specializes in opera, oratorio, and musical theatre. Her operatic roles include Leonore (Il Trovatore), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni). She has performed with institutions such as the Opera Theatre of Lucca (Italy), Lebanon Symphony Orchestra, and NKU Community Chorus. She also teaches summer courses in Salzburg, Austria, and is active as an adjudicator and recital presenter.
Professional Affiliations: She is a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Her teaching extends to Xavier University and NKU’s theatre programs. She has led outreach initiatives with Cincinnati Opera and contributed to NKU’s Preparatory Department.
