Amy G. Remensnyder is the Giancarlo Family Provost’s Professor of History and Royce Family Professor of Teaching Excellence at Brown University. She joined Brown’s faculty in 1993 and has held prestigious roles such as the Stephen Robert Assistant Professorship. Her research focuses on medieval Europe, interfaith relations, and the Mediterranean world. She earned an A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard University, studied at Cambridge and the École des Hautes Études in Paris, and received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.
Her research explores themes of captivity, religious symbolism, and borderland dynamics. Current projects include Island of Trust in a Sea of Danger: Lampedusa, examining the island’s historical role in Mediterranean mobility and violence, and Neighbors: Life in a Medieval Borderland, analyzing social networks between Granada and Castile. She also directs the Brown History Education Prison Project.
Remensnyder has received major awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship and Berlin Prize, and has held fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study and the Käte Hamburger Kolleg. Her professional service includes roles with the Medieval Academy of America and editorial boards for journals like Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies.
