Amy G. Remensnyder

Amy G. Remensnyder is an Associate Professor of History at Brown University, where she has served since 1993 after joining as an assistant professor, being named the Stephen Robert Assistant Professor in 1995, and promoted to associate professor in 1998. Her primary academic affiliation is with the Department of History at Brown University.

Professor Remensnyder specializes in the cultural and religious history of medieval Europe, with particular focus on medieval Spain and early Spanish America. Her research examines how Spanish Christians utilized the Virgin Mary as a symbol to advance the dual enterprises of conquest and conversion, analyzing identity formation dynamics between Christian and non-Christian communities within contexts of domination and religious devotion. This work bridges medieval European studies with colonial Latin American history through the lens of religious symbolism.
