Amy Diedrich is an Associate Professor at James Cook University's College of Marine and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on improving livelihood outcomes for small-scale fishing communities through applied marine social science. She works at the intersection of human-fisheries interactions, emphasizing participatory approaches with local communities, NGOs, and policymakers. Her international experience spans Central America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and currently the Asia-Pacific region.
Research interests include small-scale aquaculture, marine protected areas, sustainable livelihoods, and marine tourism. Ongoing projects in Indonesia and the Solomon Islands address climate-smart livelihood strategies and equitable resource management. Her work prioritizes practical outcomes, often involving interdisciplinary teams of natural and social scientists.
Teaching includes modules on coastal management, environmental conservation, and protected area governance. Current research students explore topics like climate adaptation in coastal communities and civil society roles in fisheries management. Diedrich’s lab, Livelihoods Labs, focuses on participatory research for sustainable development.
Notable publications address conservation benefits of marine tourism, socio-economic dimensions of fisheries management, and challenges in implementing marine protected areas. Her work consistently bridges academic research with real-world policy and community engagement.
