Amy Cheng Vollmer is a Professor of Biology at Swarthmore College, leading the Vollmer Lab, which focuses on bacterial stress response mechanisms. Her research integrates genetics, physiology, and ecology to study how bacteria adapt to environmental stresses, with a particular emphasis on universal stress proteins. She collaborates across disciplines, involving non-science faculty in microbiology projects to bridge scientific and non-scientific communities.
Her work includes developing bioluminescent bacterial sensors for real-time monitoring of environmental stressors, such as nutrient limitation and toxicants. She has published extensively on topics ranging from biofilm formation to the effects of ultrasound on bacterial viability. Vollmer actively mentors undergraduate researchers, many of whom have presented their work at national conferences like the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) General Meeting.
In her professional activities, Vollmer has served as editor-in-chief of Microbiology Education, a journal focused on undergraduate microbiology education. She also contributes to ASM committees, emphasizing student engagement and career development. Her teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, including collaborations with faculty in engineering and music.
