Amna Ansari serves as Professor in the Practice at the University of Houston's Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and is founding partner of UltraBarrio, an urban design practice dedicated to creating civic, sustainable, and generationally connected cities through interdisciplinary design approaches integrating architecture, urbanism, landscape, and technology.
Her educational credentials include a Master in Architecture and Urban Design (MAUD) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Architecture and Environmental Design (B.Arch. and EnvD.) from the University of Houston, where she currently teaches ARCH 350: Civic Workshop alongside graduate and undergraduate architecture studios.
Ansari's research pioneers transformative urban strategies addressing mobility-technology integration, ecological placemaking, and climate resilience. Her work investigates how transit infrastructure, community engagement, and sustainable design principles can foster equitable public spaces that enhance safety, accessibility, and social interaction across diverse populations and generational needs.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- AIA Houston Urban Design Award for METRO: Transit Environment Programming Catalog unifying sustainability, accessibility, and ecology
- Three 2024 Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design Awards for Neighborhood Transit Connections and Modular Transit Stations projects
- APA-Houston Gold Planning Achievement Award for the South Houston Livable Centers Study
- Exhibitions at NYU Rudin Center, ABX Boston Smart Cities panel, and Venice 2025 Architecture Biennale
Ansari secures grants through local agencies including Houston Land Bank for the Finding Home Initiative creating affordable resilient housing, and directs the Southwest Civic Core Community Pavilion currently in Construction Documents phase. Her portfolio has contributed to numerous AIA and ASLA design awards across projects exhibited in Washington DC, Rome, Milan, and Boston.
UltraBarrio functions as her primary design laboratory, advancing four interconnected practice areas: Urban Design (land-use connectivity and equity), Architecture (civic spaces and tactical urbanism), Resilience (flood adaptation and heat mitigation), and UltraBarrio Plus (community-driven placemaking), with upcoming 2025 exhibitions at University of Houston and Venice Biennale.
