Amitanshu (Amit) Das is a senior fellow and director at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) and Annenberg School for Communication. He specializes in documentary filmmaking, educational media production, and community-based initiatives. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, particularly through film training programs for students and collaborations with Philadelphia’s public schools.
Before joining Penn, Das was a faculty member and director of NYU’s Department of Film, Video, and Broadcasting. He has produced award-winning films such as Freedom School (Telly Award Winner) and The Prophecy, which document cultural and social issues. His work with the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania ensures their cultural heritage is preserved in museums and educational spaces.
Das has pioneered multimedia educational initiatives, including the eight-hour MOOC American Education Reform, and advises student groups like CAMRA and the Screening Scholarship Media Festival. His career in India included roles as a documentary filmmaker and TV producer for Doordarshan’s educational networks and the University Grants Commission.
Key research interests include media education, ethnographic documentation, and the intersection of technology with cultural preservation. He has exhibited work at MoMA, the Cantor Film Center, and the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology.
