Amit Jain, MD, MBA, is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. He holds a dual appointment in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery and is the Chief of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Johns Hopkins. He is a Core Faculty member and Executive Team member of the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative (HBHI), with affiliate roles at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Lab for Computational Sensing and Robotics at the Whiting School of Engineering.
Dr. Jain's research centers on health economics, value-based care, quality and safety in musculoskeletal care, and the development of surgical robotic devices. He holds a NIH R01 grant as Principal Investigator and has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles in top-tier journals including JAMA, Nature Communications, and JBJS. His work bridges clinical innovation, engineering, and health policy to improve patient outcomes and system-level value.
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on health services research, ethics in surgical care, pandemic response, healthcare payment models, and policy issues such as non-compete clauses and prior authorization. These works demonstrate a consistent theme of improving healthcare delivery through data-driven, interdisciplinary, and ethically informed strategies.

Dr. Jain is deeply involved in mentoring students and trainees and leads significant grant-funded research, particularly in surgical robotics and value-based care. He collaborates widely across schools and disciplines, securing seed grants and larger funding mechanisms through HBHI. His leadership as Medical Director of Value-Based Care in the Johns Hopkins Health System involves shaping care delivery models and contracting strategies at the population level.
He is affiliated with the Lab for Computational Sensing and Robotics, where his team develops next-generation robotic devices for spinal surgery. He also plays a key role in the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative, fostering collaboration between clinicians, business experts, health economists, and ethicists to tackle systemic healthcare challenges.
