Hari Nathan

Hari Nathan is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. His clinical and research work focuses on optimizing surgical care value through multidisciplinary cancer treatment and health services research.

Education:

• PhD in Health Services Research, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

• Clinical Fellowship: Complex General Surgical Oncology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (Chief Administrative Fellow)

Dr. Nathan’s research examines cost and quality variation in surgical care, with a focus on Medicare payment policies. He directs Michigan Medicine’s Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump Program and the Multidisciplinary Pancreatic Cancer Clinic. Recent work explores hospital mergers, deimplementation of low-value preoperative testing, and medical device applications in oncology.

Dr. Nathan’s recent publications highlight his expertise in healthcare economics, surgical oncology outcomes, and precision medicine. His studies employ instrumental variable analysis, cost-effectiveness modeling, and multidisciplinary clinical trial frameworks.

Dr. Nathan serves as Director of the Michigan Value Collaborative, Co-Chair of the Cancer Steering Committee for the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative, and Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. He is affiliated with the Precision Health Initiative, Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, and Rogel Cancer Center.
