Professor Amit Chakma is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Australia (UWA). Previously, he served as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario (2009-2019) and Provost and Vice-President Academic at the University of Waterloo (2001-2009). His research focuses on chemical engineering, environmental sustainability, and gas separation technologies, with contributions to carbon capture and storage, membrane technologies, and oil recovery processes. He chairs the UWA Defence and Security Institute and has led international advisory roles, including Canada’s International Education Strategy panel (2011-2013) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities Council (2017-2019).
His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in addressing climate action (SDG 13) and sustainable energy (SDG 7). Key research areas include CO₂ capture using membranes, flue gas treatment, and biogas purification. He has published over 214 articles, emphasizing membrane innovation for industrial and environmental applications. His leadership in education policy and international collaboration underscores his dual focus on academic excellence and global impact.
