Amish Morrell is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream at OCAD University's Faculty of Art in Toronto. He holds graduate faculty appointments across multiple programmes including Visual & Critical Studies BA, Criticism & Curatorial Practice, Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories, and the Interdisciplinary Art and Material Design MFA/MA programmes. His career spans curatorial work, editing, and academic roles since the 2000s.
Education: PhD in Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto (2006), with a focus on historical re-enactment in contemporary photography. Prior roles include Editor/Director of Programs at C Magazine (2008–2017) and teaching positions at York University, Ryerson University, and the University of Toronto (2006–2016).
Research interests include avant-garde/counterculture in Cape Breton, critical land-based practices, and Indigenous philosophies of sustainability. He co-leads Outdoor School, an interdisciplinary project combining art, education, and environmental engagement, featuring academic courses, exhibitions (e.g., Doris McCarthy Gallery, 2016), public events, and residencies like the Banff Centre’s 2018 programme.
Notable collaborations include exhibitions with Doris McCarthy Gallery, Confederation Centre for the Arts, and Cape Breton University Art Gallery. Public programming includes partnerships with institutions like the Toronto International Art Fair and Mercer Union. Upcoming projects include a book with Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery and Doris McCarthy Gallery.
