Erin Silver is an Associate Professor and Critical and Curatorial Studies Graduate Advisor in the Department of Art History, Visual Arts & Theory at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. She also serves as a Faculty Associate at the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice.
Dr. Silver holds a PhD from McGill University and earned both her MA and BFA from Concordia University. Her educational background reflects her interdisciplinary approach to art history and visual culture.
Her research examines the intersections of queer and feminist art with visual culture, performance, and activism, particularly within contemporary Canadian contexts. Silver investigates how art histories are constructed through gender, race, and sexuality frameworks, with special attention to institutional practices and curatorial methodologies. Her scholarship challenges traditional art historical narratives through critical and curatorial studies perspectives.
Dr. Silver serves as President of the Universities Art Association of Canada and is an editor of RACAR (Revue d'art canadienne / Canadian Art Review). Her scholarly leadership extends to curatorial work at institutions including the FOFA Gallery (Concordia University), the ArQuives (Toronto), and the Doris McCarthy Gallery (University of Toronto Scarborough).
