Dr. Amir Gohar is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the MSc Planning & Urban Leadership at the University of the West of England, affiliated with the School of Architecture and Environment and the Department of Geography & Environmental Management. He brings nearly two decades of professional experience as an urban planner, landscape architect, and sustainable urbanism expert, with work spanning municipal governments, research institutes, and community organizations in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
Education:
- BSc in Urban Planning, Cairo University
- MA in Urban Design, Oxford Brookes University
- Diploma in Land Management, Erasmus University
- PhD in Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning, UC Berkeley
Research Expertise: Balancing rapid urbanisation trends with ecological integrity of urban open spaces, public space planning in congested cities, coastal settlements, and historic urban centres. He is passionate about community engagement in public spaces and has delivered numerous lectures on the subject.
Initiatives & Memberships: Co-founding member of AMAken Placemaking (non-profit for public space transformation), co-founder of the Egyptian Society of Landscape Architects (ESLA), academic member of the Landscape Institute (AMLI), and regional leader for PlacemakingX. He also founded the Celebrate Your Local Jane Jacobs initiative and contributed to translating the New Landscape Architecture Declaration into Arabic.
Teaching & Professional Roles: Previously taught at the University of Huddersfield, Kansas State University, San Francisco State University, and University of California, Berkeley. Currently teaches design studios and urban/environmental studies seminars at UWE.
Publications: Authored the recent book Tourism Governance: A Critical Discourse on a Global Industry.
