Dr. Amelia Ruscoe is a Lecturer and Course Coordinator in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University, specializing in Early Childhood Studies. She coordinates Language and Literacy programs for Birth-8 years and teaches courses in Early Childhood Education. Her research focuses on children’s agency, transition to school, and culturally responsive pedagogy. She has over 25 years of experience in education across QLD, NSW, and WA, and has authored influential works on dialogic drawing and policy reform.
Dr. Ruscoe holds a PhD (2021), M.Ed. (2013), and two teaching degrees (1992, 1997). She is affiliated with organizations like Early Childhood Australia and has led projects funded by AISWA grants totaling over $320,000. Notable accolades include the 2021 WA Institute for Educational Research Thesis Award and multiple teaching excellence prizes.
Her research emphasizes participatory methodologies, particularly dialogic drawing, to amplify children’s voices in policy and practice. Key themes include transition to school, literacy development, and the intersection of policy and pedagogy. Recent projects investigate health literacy resources and children’s engagement post-transition.
Grants include the Transforming Transitions series (2020–2026), focusing on leveraging children’s social capital, and studies on visual mediation tools. She has supervised Master’s research on critical literacy in upper primary years.
