Amber Jacob is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Middle East Studies at the University of Michigan and a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows starting Fall 2025. She holds a BA in Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies from the University of British Columbia (2013) and an MA in Classics from the University of Copenhagen (2016). Her research focuses on ancient medical texts, particularly Demotic and Greek papyri from Graeco-Roman Egypt, exploring cross-cultural scientific exchange and the history of medicine.
Her work emphasizes the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection, analyzing Egyptian and Greek medical manuscripts to trace intercultural interactions. Recent publications include studies on cutaneous treatments in Graeco-Roman Egypt and Orphic influences on Plato. She collaborates with international teams like Scientific Papyri from Ancient Egypt (SPAE) and contributes to conferences on materia medica and ancient scientific traditions.
