Dr. Amanda tho Seeth is an Associate Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for African Affairs and affiliated with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin's Institute for Asian and African Studies. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Philipps-Universität Marburg and has conducted research at institutions including Universität Hamburg and Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Her work focuses on religious actors in sustainable development, Islam and politics, and science diplomacy. She has led projects like 'Freedom and Development? Religious Actors, Freedom of Religion and Sustainable Development' (BMZ-funded, 2020-2023) and contributed to studies on Indonesia's Islamic diplomacy and transregional academic influence. Her research highlights the role of moderate Islamic interpretations in global contexts and the intersection of religion with international policy.
Her publications analyze Indonesian Islamic intellectuals, religious NGOs' roles in SDGs, and the geopolitical dynamics of Islamic discourse. She has presented at conferences such as the DGA Conference on Contemporary Asia and the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient seminar, focusing on topics like Indonesian science diplomacy and university campuses as political arenas.
