Amelia Fauzia is a Professor in Islamic History and Culture at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and a Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, UNSW Canberra since 2011. Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Melbourne (2009) and a Master's in Islamic Studies from the University of Leiden (1998).
- PhD: University of Melbourne (2009) - Dissertation: Contestation between state and Muslim civil society in Islamic philanthropy, later published as Faith and the State, A History of Islamic Philanthropy in Indonesia (EJ Brill, 2013).
- Master: University of Leiden (1998) - Research on Islam and Javanese messianic movements (19th-20th century Java).
Research interests center around Islamic history of Indonesia, contemporary issues of Islam in Indonesia, Islamic philanthropy, and women's economic empowerment through the lens of socio-religious movements. Her work explores the interplay between religious practices and civil society dynamics, particularly focusing on humanitarian actors in Islamic philanthropy organizations and philanthropy at Indonesian universities.
Academic leadership includes roles as Head of the Institute for Research and Community Empowerment and Director of the Social Trust Fund at UIN Jakarta. She has collaborated with scholars like Assoc. Prof Minako Sakai on research related to women and Islam.
