Professor Amanda Vickery is a leading scholar of Early Modern History at Queen Mary University of London's School of History. Her research focuses on gender, consumerism, fashion, and material culture in British history, with particular emphasis on the Georgian era and post-war society. She has produced seminal works like Behind Closed Doors: At Home in Georgian England and The Gentleman's Daughter, which have won major academic prizes.
Her current research explores women’s aspirations in post-war Britain (1945–1970), presented in the Wiles Lectures (2019) and Lisa Jardine Lecture (2020). Her publications bridge social history with cultural analysis, examining topics like diary culture, fashion ethics, and domestic spaces. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Kratter Professorship at Stanford and Eleanor Searle Professorship at Caltech.
Vickery is renowned for her public engagement, including BBC series such as The Story of Women and Art and Suffragettes Forever, which reached global audiences. She has supervised over 20 PhD students, many achieving notable academic careers, and has examined doctoral candidates across numerous UK and international universities.
