Frank Trentmann is a Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London, and an associate at the Centre for Consumer Society Research in Helsinki. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and has held visiting roles at institutions including Princeton University, Bielefeld University, and the European University Institute. His research focuses on consumer culture, material culture, energy history, and modern German history, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between material, political, and moral transformations.
Education: BA from the London School of Economics, MA and PhD from Harvard University. Key research projects include the AHRC-funded 'Material Cultures of Energy' (2014-17) and the £5M ESRC-AHRC 'Cultures of Consumption' program (2002-07). He has authored influential books such as Empire of Things (2016) and Out of the Darkness: The Germans 1942-2022 (2023), recognized with prestigious awards including the Humboldt Prize and Bochum Historians' Prize.
Research interests span consumption, energy policy, morality, and everyday life, with recent work addressing sustainability and the global challenges of consumerism. His articles and books have been translated into multiple languages and widely cited in academic and public discourse. Supervision highlights include mentoring doctoral researchers on topics like post-war domestic mending and Indian widow-burning narratives.
Awards include the Wolfson History Prize shortlist (2024), Austrian Wissenschaftsbuch Prize (2018), and Humboldt-Forschungspreis (2017).
Public engagement includes contributions to Der Spiegel, The New Republic, and BBC radio, alongside lecture series on topics ranging from energy transitions to ethical consumption in modern Germany.
