Amanda R. Greene is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), specializing in legal and political philosophy, ethics, and Classical Greek philosophy. She previously held academic roles at University College London (2015–2022), Princeton University (2018–2021), and the University of Chicago Law School (2014–2015). Her research focuses on political legitimacy, power dynamics, and the intersection of philosophy with contemporary issues like digital technology and global governance.
Greene holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, an M.Phil. from the University of Oxford, and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before academia, she worked as a strategy consultant in the private and non-profit sectors across the U.S., India, and Australia.
Her current book project, The Quest for Legitimacy: Power and Leadership in a Fractured World, explores how political legitimacy is constructed in unstable contexts. Earlier projects include Plato as Political Realist and Can There Be a Philosophy of Power?
Her publications address topics such as digital legitimacy, market ethics, and the philosophical foundations of institutions. She has contributed to leading journals like Journal of Moral Philosophy, European Journal of Philosophy, and Social Philosophy and Policy.
