Amanda Olmstead is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Drama, Carnegie Mellon University, since fall 2019. She specializes in theatre history, choreography, and embodied dramaturgy, teaching courses like Foundations of Drama 2 and Musical Theatre History. In addition to her role at CMU, she teaches part-time at the University of Pittsburgh (Performance & History, Literature & Criticism) and Golden Gate University (College Writing & Media Communications).

- BA in Theatre with a minor in Dance, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Her research focuses on theatre history, choreography, and performance as a tool for communication, with a particular emphasis on embodied dramaturgy and diasporic dance traditions. She explores how physical movement and ensemble dynamics shape narrative structures in musical theatre.
Her publications, including the 2023 article “Développé: Katherine Dunham’s Diasporic Dance” and the upcoming chapter “Dance as Narrative: Storytelling Through the Ensemble Body”, highlight intersections of cultural identity, historical analysis, and movement-based storytelling. These works reflect her expertise in dance history, musical theatre, and interdisciplinary performance studies.
