Professor Amanda Mooney serves as Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning in Deakin University's Faculty of Arts and Education. She has been instrumental in leading curriculum innovation, teaching excellence, and assessment practices that support student experiences and graduate outcomes within the School of Education since 2019.
Her academic credentials include a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Physical & Health Education (Distinction), both from Deakin University.
Mooney's research is deeply rooted in social justice, focusing on addressing issues that constrain socially just practices in health and physical education, sport, schooling, and professional education settings. Her work spans diverse contexts including teacher education, elite women's sport, areas of social disadvantage, and rural and regional communities. She employs primarily qualitative methodologies grounded in post-structural theoretical perspectives to examine how cultural and societal factors shape identities, professional practice, and pedagogies. Her recent research has increasingly focused on teacher workforce supply issues and approaches to teacher education that support workforce development in high-demand areas.
Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to understanding social justice in physical education, teacher education practices, mentoring relationships, and gender dynamics in sports. Professor Mooney has supervised numerous doctoral students across diverse research areas including teacher education, social justice in schooling, women's sports participation, and educational leadership. Her extensive grant portfolio includes significant projects funded by the Department of Education and Training Victoria, Australian Football League, and Cottage by the Sea, focusing on teacher workforce supply, mentoring practices, and educational equity. She is actively involved in the Research for Educational Impact (REDI) strategic research center at Deakin University, co-convening the 'Innovating Teacher Education' faculty research group and contributing to the 'Diversity and Social Justice in Education' theme.
