Amanda Lee is a Lecturer in Patient, Carer and Public Involvement (PCPI) at the University of Sunderland, based in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing. She is also co-chair of the Family Staff Network. Previously, she worked as a Student Support and Retention Research Associate on a Health Education England-funded project supporting pre-registration nursing students.
Lee holds a BA (Hons) Sociology from Queen’s University Belfast, a PGCE in Primary Education from Northumbria University (earning Qualified Teacher Status), and an MSc in Inequality and Society from the University of Sunderland. Her research focuses on educational and social inequalities, LGBTQ+ teachers' experiences in UK schools, and nurse retention initiatives.
Her teaching responsibilities include leading the MNRN02 module in the MNurs (Adult) program and contributing to the Specialist Community Practitioner District Nursing Postgraduate Diploma Apprenticeship. She integrates PCPI across Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health courses.
Her current research, linked to the Health Education England 50,000 Nurses initiative, explores retention challenges faced by pre-registration nursing students through qualitative interviews. Past work examined LGBTQ+ teachers’ identity disclosure in schools.
