Dr. Amanda Haynes is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Her research focuses on hate crime, policing, stigma, and minority access to justice. She co-directs the European Centre for the Study of Hate and has led over 10 funded projects since 2014, including the All Island Network for Challenging Hate and the NETHATE Horizon 2020 initiative. Her work emphasizes marginalized groups such as Irish Travellers, LGBTQ+ communities, and victims of hate crimes.
Education includes a PhD (2000), MSc in Social Science (Sociology) from University College Dublin (1997), and a BA in European Studies (1996). She teaches modules like Hate Crime: Roots, Realities and Redress, and Qualitative Research Methods, receiving multiple teaching awards including the University of Limerick Teaching Excellence Award (2011).
Her research spans hate crime discourses, victim experiences, and legal frameworks. Notable publications include analyses of spatial impacts of hate crime victimization and normalization discourses among LGBTQ+ communities. She has advised on hate crime legislation and contributed to policy reports for the European Commission and Irish government.
Awards include the University of Surrey Visiting Fellowship (2019) and teaching commendations. She has served on the Sociological Association of Ireland executive and as its President (2008). Current projects address hate crime legislation gaps and interdisciplinary criminal justice approaches.
