Dr. Amanda Froehlich Chow is an Associate Professor and MPH Program Director at the University of Saskatchewan. Her work focuses on integrating holistic approaches—combining Western and Traditional Knowledge—into interventions promoting health in rural and Indigenous communities, particularly among vulnerable populations like young children and older adults. She leads interdisciplinary collaborations with Indigenous communities to develop chronic disease prevention initiatives.
Her research interests include child health, aging in place, rural health, Indigenous health, physical activity/physical literacy, and community-based participatory research. She currently teaches courses such as PUBH 807 (Health Program Planning and Evaluation) and PUBH 803 (Health Promotion).
Dr. Froehlich Chow has secured significant grant funding, including a CIHR Team Grant ($1.99M) for pediatric diabetes prevention in Indigenous communities and a SSHRC grant ($199K) for land-based early learning environments rooted in Indigenous knowledge. Notable publications include studies on the Healthy Start-Départ Santé intervention (BMC Public Health), caregiver support in dementia (Canadian Journal on Aging), and rural healthcare barriers (BMC Health Services Research).
Her work emphasizes partnerships with Indigenous communities, such as the Nîsowak project co-creating land-based early learning environments and the ATOHTITAM ~Becoming of Age initiative addressing HIV/STBBI inequities among Indigenous youth. These projects highlight her commitment to culturally grounded, community-driven solutions.
