Amanda Bongers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Queen’s University, leading the Chemistry Education Research (QCER) group. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Waterloo (2011) and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Ottawa (2016). Her postdoctoral research (2016–2019) focused on chemistry education and neuroscience under Prof. Alison Flynn and Dr. Georg Northoff. Her interdisciplinary research bridges cognitive science, neuroscience, and educational theory to study science learning, particularly in chemistry. Key interests include mental model formation, spatial ability, and the role of visualization in education. She teaches CHEM 803 (Scientific Communication) and CHEM 112 (General Chemistry).
Research Interests include:
- Cognitive processes in science learning
- Interdisciplinary education strategies
- Neuroscience of learning
- Decolonized education practices
- Sustainability in chemistry curricula
Awards: Recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Early Career Researcher in Chemistry Education Award, CIC IUPAC Travel Award, and multiple NSERC scholarships. Her work has been funded by Queen’s University, NSERC, eCampusOntario, and SSHRC.
Advancement: Chair of Queen’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee; Faculty Advisor for the Chemistry Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness Society (IDEAS). Supervises a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate researchers exploring educational neuroscience, curriculum design, and inclusive pedagogy.
Publications span Chemistry Education Research and Practice, Neurosci. Res., and the Journal of the American Chemical Society, emphasizing both educational innovation and organic synthesis.
