Amalia Katopodi is a Lecturer at Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University, specializing in architectural pedagogy and urban design. She leads Studio 10: 'Displacement: the Global Challenge' in the MA Programme, focusing on socially engaged projects addressing displacement and migration. From 2016–2020, she served as Deputy Head and Programme Director, spearheading pedagogical reforms that restructured the Master's Programme and studio frameworks. Her work emphasizes experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and live projects with NGOs and communities in crisis zones like Lesvos and Izmir.
Her research has been recognized with a PUNKTUM Grant and supported by initiatives like the WHIT Project and UmArts' Small Visionary Project. Exhibitions include the Venice Architectural Biennale (2021) and the British Academy Summer Showcase (2022). She co-founded i.architects and belongs to the Office of Displaced Designers, bridging education, research, and practice. Key educational milestones include reforming the BA Programme’s first-year curriculum and introducing innovative methods like the Un-fashion Show and 1:1 live project pavilions.
Her leadership in the Global Free Unit and collaborations with the New European Bauhaus and Displacement Working Group reflect her commitment to addressing global challenges through architecture. Current projects include the 'Making the Difference: Izmir' initiative, focusing on sustainable recovery and community-driven design.
