Amal S. El-Obeidi is a DFG research associate at the University of Bayreuth's Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on political elites, governance, tribal politics, and political Islam in Libya, with a current project on political orders in Libya and Northern Mali. She holds a PhD in Middle Eastern Politics from the University of Durham (UK) and has held leadership roles at the University of Garyounis (Libya), including Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science (1999-2001).

- Guest professorships at Freie Universität Berlin (2015-2016) and Exeter University (2002-2003).
Research interests emphasize transitional governance, tribal dynamics, and political culture in conflict-affected regions. Her work integrates field-based studies of post-revolutionary Libya and comparative analyses of political organization in North Africa.
Scientific contributions include advising UN ESCWA on gender policies in the Arab World (2003) and roles in security governance projects (e.g., GCSP, 2003-2004). Her current DFG-funded project explores 'Cyrenaica Contested: Politics, Identity and Justice in Times of Turmoil.'
