Alyssa DiRusso is the Whelan W. and Rosalie T. Palmer Professor of Law at Cumberland School of Law, Samford University. She specializes in trusts and estates, tax law, and nonprofit organizations. DiRusso joined the faculty in 2005 after practicing as a trusts and estates attorney with Bank of America and Choate Hall & Stewart in Boston. She earned her JD from the University of Texas School of Law (Order of the Coif) and a BS in Psychology and Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University (Phi Beta Kappa).
Her teaching focuses on Wills, Trusts and Estates, Estate and Gift Tax, and Federal Income Tax. She has authored over a dozen law review articles and textbooks, including Trusts and Estates in Focus. Research interests include intestacy laws, charitable organizations, and tax-exempt entities. She serves on the American Law Institute and is an Academic Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
DiRusso has received multiple teaching awards, including the Harvey S. Jackson Teaching Excellence Award (2009, 2013). Her professional memberships include the United States Supreme Court Bar and the Association of American Law Schools. She has held editorial roles for the ACTEC Law Journal and contributes to JOTWELL’s Trusts & Estates section.
