Alysia Ramos

Alysia Ramos is an Associate Professor of Dance at Oberlin College, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Her work bridges performance, choreography, and cultural exploration, with a focus on Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian dance traditions. She previously worked in NYC, leading the Mezclado Movement Group and collaborating with global artists. Her research includes studies in Cuba, Senegal, and Brazil, notably under master teacher Jorge Alabe in Rio de Janeiro.

Research & Creative Work: Ramos explores cultural identity through dance, blending contemporary and traditional practices. Her film Becoming Oxum; My Body Remembers (2021) was showcased by the Cleveland Dance Festival. She has collaborated with artists like Mustapha Braimah and Solange Gomes, creating immersive dance-theater works. Her work often addresses themes of hybridity, memory, and ritual.

Teaching & Advising: Ramos teaches courses such as Samba, Latin American Dance, and Senior Capstone Projects. She mentors students in dance production and interdisciplinary practices. Her courses emphasize cultural context and technical skill development.

Labs/Teams: Active in collaborations like Burnt Sugar/Danz, a NY-based collective blending live music and conducted improvisation.
