Aly Colman

Dr Aly Colman is a Lecturer and Academic Head of Learning & Teaching at UCL’s Institute of Education (IOE), within the Faculty of Education and Society. He specializes in Educational Leadership, focusing on addressing educational inequalities in deprived areas through critical sociological perspectives (Foucault, Bourdieu). His work critiques school inspection policies and their impact on leadership and inequality.

Education:

• EdD in Education from UCL IOE (2011–2018)

Research Interests: Educational leadership’s role in tackling inequality, school accountability, policy implementation, and the intersection of arts education with deprivation. Collaborative work with the Mauritius Institute of Education explores leadership in diverse global contexts.

Teaching & Roles:

• Programme Leader for MA Educational Leadership (In-Service)
• Module Leader for 'Leading Managing Change and Improvement', 'Leadership for the Learning Community', and Dissertation modules

Awards: 2022 BERA Early Career Researcher Best Paper Prize for work on school inspection and policy compliance in deprived areas.
