Dr Alun Hughes is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Education Division at the University of St Andrews' School of Medicine. He leads the school's education research strategy, oversees trainer recognition processes, and manages the Medical Support Team. Previously, he held key roles including Director of Teaching and Module Controller for the BSc (Hons) Medicine program. His academic journey includes a PhD and BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from the University of Aberdeen, where he researched drug repurposing for bone health. Transitioning to medical education, he focuses on technology-driven learning innovations like extended reality (XR) and AI through the ComSIM research initiative.
Research Interests: Technology-enhanced education, pandemic response strategies in medical teaching, risk management in technology use, and community-based medical training. His ComSIM project explores XR and AI applications in community education.
Teaching Activities: Physiology/pharmacology instruction, curriculum development, dissertation supervision, and pastoral academic support. He pioneered ScotGEM, Scotland's first graduate-entry medical program collaborating with Dundee University.
Grants & Projects: Principal investigator for the ComSIM initiative (2023-2025), focusing on AI/XR in medical education.
