Alun Hughes (1942-2013) was an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies at Brock University. His research focused on the historical geography of the Niagara Peninsula, particularly early surveys, settlement patterns, and the evolution of communities along the Niagara Escarpment and Welland Canal regions. He authored numerous works on local history, including studies of the Brock University campus, the First Welland Canal, and historical figures like Laura Secord.
His research interests encompassed the historical development of Thorold, St. Catharines, and surrounding townships, with a strong emphasis on documenting the interplay between human activity and geographic landscapes. Notable topics included early shipping and shipbuilding, the role of religion in local communities (e.g., Early Methodism and Welland Avenue United Church), and the socio-economic impacts of infrastructure projects like the Feeder Canal.
Hughes also explored lesser-known historical narratives, such as 'History That Isn’t So' and the origins of place names like 'Dick’s Creek' and 'Junius.' His work often bridged archival research with public history, aiming to preserve and contextualize Niagara’s cultural heritage.
