Alpa Shah is the Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow at All Souls College. Her research focuses on revolutionary insurgency, global inequality, and indigenous politics, with extensive fieldwork in India and Nepal. She holds a PhD from the London School of Economics (2004) and previously taught at LSE (2012–2024) and Goldsmiths, University of London (2004–2012).
She has authored award-winning books including Nightmarch (2018) and The Incarcerations (2024), exploring Maoist movements and democratic struggles in India. Her research has been funded by major grants from the European Research Council, ESRC, and the British Academy. She serves on editorial boards of American Ethnologist, Journal of Royal Anthropological Institute, and others.
Shah’s work bridges cultural anthropology and political economy, addressing themes of caste, gender, and environmental justice. She has contributed to BBC Radio documentaries on India’s Red Belt and received the 2022 ERC Public Engagement Prize for her outreach efforts. Her interdisciplinary approach emphasizes ethnography as a tool for understanding marginalized communities’ struggles against systemic inequality.
