Almut Goldhahn

Dr. Almut Goldhahn is a Scientific Collaborator at the Fototeca (Photo Archive) of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, part of the Max Planck Society. She has been contributing to the institute's mission of conducting basic research in art history within a transcultural and global perspective since 2008.

Her academic background includes:

• Studies in Art History, German Studies, and Comparative Literature at universities in Leipzig, Turin, and Berlin
• Magister Artium in 2002 with a thesis on Andrea Palladio's tomb monument in Vicenza
• Doctorate from Humboldt-Universität Berlin in 2011 with a dissertation on the social advancement and art patronage of the Rezzonico papal family

Dr. Goldhahn's research focuses on sepulchral art of the early modern period and the 19th century, examining tomb monuments as cultural artifacts that reveal social structures and power dynamics. She also investigates art patronage during the early modern period, particularly how powerful families like the Rezzonico papal family used artistic commissions to establish social status. Another significant area of her work explores Oriental knotted carpets and their reception in Western art and culture, contributing to scholarship on transcultural exchanges. Her expertise bridges historical research with contemporary issues in digital archiving through her work with the Fototeca.

As a member of the Fototeca team, Dr. Goldhahn contributes to one of the most important collections of documentary photography on Italian art and architectural history.
