Allison S. Hyngstrom, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University. She serves as a key researcher in the Integrative Neural Engineering & Rehabilitation Laboratory (INERL) and collaborates with the Stroke Rehabilitation Center of Southeastern Wisconsin (SRC), a partnership between Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
- Education: PhD in Neuroscience (Northwestern University), MS in Physical Therapy (Washington University), BA in Biology (Augustana College)
Dr. Hyngstrom’s research focuses on understanding mechanisms of motor impairment in chronic stroke survivors, particularly muscle fatigue, using biomechanical measurements and neurophysiological techniques. Her work bridges clinical rehabilitation practices with neural engineering to improve functional outcomes.
The Stroke Rehabilitation Center, where she is a faculty member, emphasizes interdisciplinary clinical programs and community-engaged research informed by a Community Academic Advisory Board (CAAB). Her lab (INERL) investigates neural engineering solutions for individuals with neural disabilities, including stroke and spinal cord injury.
Recent research trends include studying balance perturbations in neurological disorders, functional connectivity post-stroke, visual field impacts on gait in multiple sclerosis, and EEG-based brain network analysis in stroke survivors.
Professional Affiliations: American Physical Therapy Association, Society for Neuroscience. She is a licensed Physical Therapist in Illinois.
