Allison Helmuth, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas. Her research focuses on intersectional social inequalities in urban neighborhoods, particularly in housing and neighborhood change. She holds a PhD from the University of Illinois-Chicago (2022).
Research Interests: Dr. Helmuth examines how systemic inequalities are created and contested through spatial dynamics. Her work integrates urban sociology, intersectionality, qualitative methods, and sociological theory to analyze issues like gentrification, racial exclusion, and landlord practices.
Publications & Awards: Her 2021 article in Feminist Theory won the 2022 ASA Race, Gender, Class Section Award. Notable works include studies on Chicago’s small-building landlords, white space-claiming in Washington DC, and LGBTQ+ attitudes. Her research appears in City and Community, Sociological Forum, and policy reports.
Teaching & Engagement: She regularly teaches urban sociology, social inequalities, and qualitative methods. Her office is located in Sycamore Hall 288E, with hours TuTh 2:30-4:00.
