Dr. Allison Carter is a Senior Lecturer and Group Leader of the Sexual Health and Reproductive Equity (SHARE) Research Group at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney. She also holds an Adjunct Professor position at Simon Fraser University, Canada. Her research focuses on strengthening responses to gender, social justice, and sexual and reproductive health and rights through participatory methodologies. Her work spans diverse populations including women living with HIV, young people with disabilities, migrant communities, and broader populations. Dr. Carter’s expertise includes community-based research, co-design approaches with lived experience stakeholders, and translating evidence into actionable strategies through creative methods.
Education: BSc from the University of British Columbia, MPH in Global Health from Simon Fraser University, and PhD in Health Sciences from Simon Fraser University.
Research interests include intersecting social determinants of sexual health, co-designing interventions for marginalized groups, and holistic approaches to sexual agency, pleasure, and reproductive rights. She leads projects such as the Global Rights and Relationships Programme and the HIV Made Me Fabulous initiative, which use film and storytelling to combat stigma. Dr. Carter actively engages in media commentary and public writing on health, sexuality, and relationships.
Key research areas: HIV/AIDS, disability health, migrant health equity, and critical analyses of gender norms in sexual health. Her work emphasizes structural barriers and systemic inequalities affecting sexual and reproductive health outcomes.
