Allard Jongman is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Kansas, where he directs research in acoustic phonetics and speech perception. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Brown University and leads the Phonetics & Psycholinguistics Laboratory. His educational background includes an M.A. in Linguistics from both the University of Amsterdam and Brown University.
Research focuses on:
- Mapping acoustic properties to linguistic features across languages
- Perceptual cues in speech recognition
- Second language phonetics acquisition
- Cross-modal audio-visual perception
Recent publications exhibit strong emphasis on experimental approaches to speech adaptation in conversation, with increasing focus on tone perception in multilingual contexts since 2023. His 2020 textbook 'Phonetics: Transcription, Production, Acoustics and Perception' is a key reference in the field.
Laboratory Direction: Manages KU's Phonetics & Psycholinguistics Laboratory with capabilities for acoustic analysis, perceptual testing, and eye-tracking research.
